What Is the Song “Save Me” About?

What inspired Glen to write the song "Save Me"?

Wait… Glen plays more than just drums? Let's take you back to the beginning.

A Spark at Age 7

I didn’t come from a particularly musical family, but music still found me early. When I was just 7 years old, my cousin brought over his guitar. We had a lone snare drum in the house, and I joined in the jam. That one moment lit a fire in me — and I’ve been playing drums ever since. Now I’m 44.

From Drums to Guitars… Eventually

Over the years, I played in bands as a drummer and helped record our music. About 15 years ago, I took a quick guitar lesson from my friend Chris. It clicked. I got a guitar and bass, and started experimenting with songwriting and home recording.

But before long, life pulled me back behind the drum kit. My guitars hung untouched on the wall for years — collecting literal dust.

Then Everything Changed

After our beloved dog Buddy passed away, I had a lot of emotion building up. Not long after, we adopted Pawly. He helped us begin to heal, but Pawly came with his own struggles. He was anxious, afraid of strangers, and clearly had some trauma in his past.

His short tail stood out — and I couldn’t stop wondering: Did someone hurt him? That question sparked a story in my mind. I imagined Pawly once belonging to another — someone who mistreated him and abandoned him in the woods. That image became the emotional core of “Save Me.”

Giving Pawly a Voice

I wrote the song from Pawly’s point of view. In many ways, I became his voice — and the voice of all animals needing rescue, healing, and love.

So, after 15 years, I dusted off my guitar, restrung it, and got back to work. My bass didn’t even function anymore — so I got a new one. I’ve spent years producing and recording other vocalists, but this time, I stepped up and sang it myself.

I recorded everything in my home studio — solo.

Buddy’s Legacy Lives On

Years ago, I recorded Buddy’s signature howls just for fun. I’m grateful I did — because I was able to include his voice in the track. Pawly makes an appearance too.

"Save Me" is dedicated to Buddy, whose love continues to inspire me. He is the heart of the song — a symbol for every animal who deserves compassion and a second chance.

Thank you for listening and being part of this journey.

“Save Me” isn’t just a song — it’s a piece of my heart, and theirs too.

  • Great tribute to Buddy and Pawly! Thanks for highlighting the importance of animal rescues and the unfortunate amount of animal abuse. There are so many wonderful dogs that experienced so much trauma that need a new lease on life. So happy both Buddy and now Pawly have the most wonderful loving family.

  • I love hearing Buddy howl and Pawly with his cute whatever you call it with his head going side to side at the end. I like the lead guitar and don’t know how you did it. Is it harmonics on the guitar? The words from Pawly and Buddy’s past . And Pawly and Buddy being saved by you. Love the sons and downloaded to phone. I could not find it on Amazon music, but can play on apple phone. Thank you. Love it. Are the White Stripes of Pawly and Petey reuniting soon for a play date?? Hee hee. I love the June photos on the calendar of Buddy getting loving hugs from kitty sis and the tea party outfit. So wonderful!!
